Back to the Roots: DreamHack Leipzig Will Return to Its Roots in 2021
More than 25 years ago a group of friends decided to have a LAN Party in a primary school in Malung, Sweden. What they didn't know then: DreamHack, the name they gave this gathering of gaming enthusiasts a few years later, would lay the foundation for the World's premier gaming festival. Today, events take place over several continents. DreamHack Leipzig has been an integral part of the festival calendar since 2016. In the wake of the corona pandemic and the challenges it poses for the world, DreamHack Leipzig will embark on a journey back to its roots. This January, DreamHack Leipzig will hold a selected online program.
At its core, DreamHack is all about community and friends, coming together to play games and share their passion for everything gaming. The motto "DreamHack Leipzig - Home Edition" encourages visitors, LAN participants and the whole community of DreamHack Leipzig to come together in small groups at home, in gaming bars or other locations from January 22-24, 2021. Together with their teams or players from all over Germany, participants can play in the numerous tournaments being organized and provided by DreamHack Leipzig. In addition, the community can look forward to the exciting on-line programs being developed by DreamHack Leipzig partners.
“This year has brought a new meaning to the original motto of the first-ever DreamHack Leipzig ‘Gaming is Coming Home’. We are very happy that despite the ongoing corona pandemic, we have been able to come up with a great concept that will ensure that our loyal community doesn't have to miss out on their favorite gaming festival. Backed by our excellent partners, we are going to create an exciting start to the 2021 gaming year despite all the obstacles," explains Markus Geisenberger, Managing Director of Leipziger Messe.
Casekingis already on board as an exclusive DreamStore partner – the community can look forward to great hardware offers in the online store. The eSport-Bund Deutschland e.V. (ESBD) and Uniliga will feature their own program highlights for DreamHack Leipzig – Home Edition. Two of the largest clans of the past DreamHack Leipzig editions have also confirmed their participation: 404 Multigaming e.V. with 165 members and Reactor Squad with 120 members. Confirmed gaming venues where the community can meet in January include LVL-Berlin, the 1337 Camp and TaKe’s Gaming Bar.
Why won't there be a DreamHack Leipzig at the Leipzig Trade Fair grounds in 2021? Unfortunately, the current health regulations do not allow for an interactive gaming festival in which celebrating, playing and experiencing games on site are essential components of the event concept. On top of that, large international esports tournaments are currently difficult to plan due to travel restrictions. As a result, Leipziger Messe, together with co-organizer Schenker Technologies/XMG and licensor DreamHack AB, decided to hold DreamHack Leipzig 2021 in a modified format.
DreamHack Leipzig 2022 will return as usual at the Leipzig Trade Fair grounds between January 28th and 30th, 2022.
